Nearly 3 in 5 Singaporeans think their team is underskilled: study

Over 9 in 10 are concerned they are not receiving ample training and development to improve their skills.

More than half or 57% of Singapore employees think that their current team is underskilled to meet the needs of their business, a study by edtech firm Skillsoft with data from Vanson Bourne found. Moreover, nine in 10 Singaporeans feel concerned that they are not receiving the learning, development, and training that they need from their organisation to prepare them for future employability and further skills.

The research also found that 85% of the respondents see the need to learn a new skill in 2019 in order to remain confident in their respective roles. Eight in 10 also think that their organisations could provide more training, learning and upskilling opportunities besides what has already been given to them.

According to the findings of the study, 92% of respondents think that employers opt for new hires when new roles in the organisations are needed to be filled as they have failed to implement appropriate learning and development programmes to reskill or upskill their people. Four in five said that roles are filled with external candidates all or most of the time.
