Man jailed and fined over illegally hiring an Immigration offender: MOM

It is an offence under the foreign employment law in Singapore.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said a 41-year-old Singaporean and a director of Exclaim was convicted with nine months and two weeks imprisonment over the illegal hiring and harbouring of an Immigration offender.

In a statement, MOM said Poh Jinixiang, is also facing a fine of $8,000 over violations in the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA) and the Immigration Act.

Poh hired an Immigration offender without a valid work pass and harboured the said offender in his residence. He allegedly committed an offence in the immigration law due to the offender's execution of duties by providing fake information on his employee’s whereabouts.

The offender was also convicted with 20 days of imprisonment and fined $5,000. She also has an overstaying penalty and has since been deported and is banned from re-entering the city-state.

“Under the EFMA, any person caught employing a foreigner without a valid work pass shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $5,000 and $30,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both,” said MOM.
