Sunseap, NTUC partner for 1.48MWp rooftop solar project at Downtown East

The project can generate 1.9GWh electricity annually when completed.

Sunseap and NTUC Club partnered for the installation of a rooftop solar system on a lifestyle and entertainment building at Downtown East in Pasir Ris.

The 1.48-megawatt peak system—Sunseap’s first clean energy project for a lifestyle and entertainment building—can generate an estimated 1.9-gigawatt hour of electricity annually when completed. This is equivalent to avoiding 1,346 metric tons of carbon emissions or offsetting the consumption of around 440 four-room HDB flats, Sunseap said in a statement.

The power purchase agreement between Sunseap and NTUC Club, the owner of Downtown East, will run for 20 years. Phase 1 has just been completed, whilst the second phase will commence in the second quarter. 

The roof spaces utilised at Downtown East’s E!Avenue retail mall and 387-room D’Resort account for 5% of the total area but the system installed will be able to provide 9% of the complex’s total energy consumption, according to Sunseap.

“As Singapore strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we need to make use of every available space to boost solar energy production. This partnership with Downtown East demonstrates how through careful and thoughtful planning, we can generate a significant amount of green energy despite the limitation of space,” Sunseap CEO Frank Phuan said.

Ronnie Tan, group director of NTUC Club and General Manager of Downtown East, said the solar project is part of their “go-green initiatives” and their commitment to contribute to Singapore's push for renewable energy.
