SP Group wins bid to develop a district cooling and heating system in Chengdu, China

Total investment estimated to exceed RMB 200m ($37.27m)

SP Group has won the tender to design, build and operate a district cooling and heating system for the new International Sports Park City in Chengdu, China.

SP plans to invest more than RMB 200m ($37.27m) into the sustainable energy management project as part of its 19-year energy service contract. 

The solution, once operational next year, will enable the International Sports Park City to boost its energy use efficiency by over 30% for cooling and about 50% for heating. 

SP said its sustainable cooling solution will be boosted by an ice thermal energy storage system, marking the company’s first-ever deployment of such a system in China. The project is also expected to be SP’s largest district cooling system in Chengdu to date.

SP said a successful rollout of the solution will translate to 2,900 Megawatt-hour (MWh) in electricity savings each year and a reduction of 1,700 tonnes in carbon emissions.

Located in Chengdu’s Wuhou District, the sports complex is an integrated sports and cultural development with commercial, residential and leisure components spanning 278,000 square metres.

The sustainable cooling solution will be enhanced with an ice thermal energy storage system that will strengthen the system’s reliability and performance. 

Last month, SP announced that it will invest $76m to build a 90-megawatt (MW) aquavoltaic farm in Qingdao City Shandong Province.
