Singapore and Malaysia to cooperate on energy market issues

The two countries’ energy authorities will hold a virtual dialogue in H1, 2021.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Malaysia’s Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga - ST) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

The MOU, signed at the 13th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), serves a framework for both organisations to share knowledge and improve technical cooperation in the planning and reliability of gas and electricity systems; regulation of wholesale and retail electricity markets; and cooperation at multilateral meetings, the press release stated.

A virtual dialogue between EMA and ST will be held in the first half of 2021, to discuss the challenges and impact of COVID-19 on the energy sectors in the two countries.

The dialogue will see both organisations share best practices on regulatory responses to support energy markets whilst safeguarding consumers’ interests.
