SG, Laos strengthen energy cooperation

Areas of cooperation include renewable energy deployment in Lao PDR.

Singapore and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) have agreed to further support each other’s clean energy transition through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation.

The MoU was signed by Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng and Lao PDR Minister of Energy and Mines Daovong Phonekeo.

Areas of cooperation under the MoU include renewable energy deployment in Lao PDR,  development of regional power grids and grid interconnections for cross-border electricity trade, and development of systems and procedures to measure, report and verify renewable energy.

“The MoU builds on the successful commencement of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) earlier this year. It will enhance cross-border electricity trading in the region, and enable countries in the region to decarbonise and meet domestic energy needs while creating jobs and economic growth for the source countries. It is also a step towards realising the broader ASEAN Power Grid vision,” Tan said.
