No toxic gases so far on the mainland from Shell refinery fire
The blaze had been extinguished but those with respiratory problems are advised to avoid the western part of Singapore near Bukom.
A government press statement on 29 September 2011 said, “Thus far, NEA has not detected the presence of any toxic gases on the mainland.”
It added that depending on the prevailing wind conditions, smoke from the fire at Bukom may have some effects on the air quality in the western parts of Singapore such as Jurong, Teban Gardens, West Coast, Pasir Panjang.
NEA is monitoring the situation closely and will issue the relevant health advisories when necessary.
