SP Telecommunications captures the SBR Technology Excellence Award for IoT - Telecommunications

Through SP Telecom’s platform, businesses can benefit from IoT without hefty upfront investments and long lead times for set-up and deployment.

SP Telecom has launched Singapore’s first pay-as-you-use IoT-as-a-Service platform trial for a multi-protocol network solution that lets organisations leverage a secure network and access to pervasive hubs across the country for multi-edge cloud computing. This makes it easier for businesses to adopt Internet of Things (IoT) applications and technologies in a more cost-effective manner through a common IoT platform by sharing resources without costly investment on infrastructure, connectivity, data analytics and applications.

In the world of business, companies thrive when they are able to skillfully adopt new technologies to serve the market’s needs. Success is even sweeter for those who invent and roll out revolutionary technologies. For this reason, Singapore Business Review (SBR) pays tribute to enterprises that take risks and serve as role models in the development of ground-breaking products, services, and strategies. In SBR’s Technology Excellence Awards 2019, uniqueness and innovation, effectiveness and impact, and dynamism are the elements that determine who deserves an accolade.

One of this year’s tech champions is SP Telecom, a joint venture between ST Engineering and SP Group, which developed the first Internet of Things as a Service (IoT-a-a-S) platform in Singapore, which begun its trial phase in June 2018. Through this platform, businesses can benefit from IoT without hefty upfront investments and long lead times for set-up and deployment. Businesses can also leverage SP Telecom’s access to pervasive hubs to perform multi-access edge computing on a truly diverse network. For IoT partners, this means being empowered to create smart city applications, such as eco-friendly and energy-efficient buildings. Deployment can be in various fields such as transportation; public safety and security systems; amenities such as street lighting and lift monitoring; energy and water resource management; and other facilities management services.

The advantages of IoT-a-a-S are as follows:

  • Unlimited data on a secure, diverse and reliable fibre network, as well as high network availability especially for large files such as videos
  • Plug-and-play capability with multiprotocol access
  • Access to pervasive hubs across Singapore for edge computing to enable faster IoT application services, closer to the industries, events and people being served
  • A single point of contact for multiple locations
  • SDWAN-enabled data network that gives subscribers full control and visibility over bandwidth usage and application deployment

All these features are available via a subscription model for as low as $2 per month for each connected device.

A client that has come on board the trial phase of the IoT-a-a-S platform is OneBerry Technologies, which needed to enhance its video surveillance cameras with analytics. One option was to use analytics embedded IP cameras, which would be up to four times more expensive than basic IP cameras. Furthermore, the embedded IP camera’s built-in analytics has just a few functions and is not programmable with new analytics. SP Telecom solved OneBerry’s problem by using the edge computing capabilities of its IoT platform to layer analytics on top of current video surveillance footage without replacing the cameras. With the open API, clients can program new functions and include new analytics protocols based on their needs. Thus, customers can enjoy cost savings and fast deployment without compromising coverage. There is also no capital cost incurred as they can continue to use their existing cameras.

The introduction of SP Telecom’s IoT-a-a-S platform is perfectly aligned with Singapore’s reputation as a technology hub in Southeast Asia. IoT revenue in Singapore is expected to reach $714 million in 2025, according to consulting and research firm Analysys Mason. Applications will account for $349 million, whilst connectivity and services will be valued at $95 million.

With the availability of this pioneering IoT-a-a-S platform, ambitious enterprises and their partners can move rapidly into the IoT space in an agile and cost-efficient manner.

The Technology Excellence Awards, presented by Singapore Business Review, was held on 30 May 2019 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore.

This year’s nominations were judged by a panel consisting of Cheang Wai Keat, Head of Advisory, Ernst & Young LLP; Darwin Thio, Director, Cybersecurity & Technology Services, Nexia TS; Daryl Pereira, Head of Cybersecurity, KPMG; Evelyn Lim, Executive Director, Tax Advisory, BDO LLP; and Jonathan Kok, Co-Head of Technology, Media & Communications Industry Group, RHTLaw Taylor Wessing LLP.
