Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a crucial commodity that holds high importance given many countries’ national and economical security and citizens’ well-being due to its vast and universal industrial applications. Thus, global transportation and distribution of LPG are imperative, and this presents mobility, health, safety & environmental challenges.

Despite that, there are gas carrier ships specifically designed to carry transport LPG, LNG, or liquefied chemical gases in bulk, the operations of such gas loadings, stenching, and discharging, remain highly risky activities that require real-time safety and mobility requirements.

Stenching of LPG & Risks

One of the major risks associated with LPG handling and usage activities is the detection of LPG leakages. In its natural form, LPG is odourless, yet highly flammable, explosive, and poisonous. Therefore, the immediate detection of LPG leakages is vital for both lives and the environment.

The stenching process is a universal method that introduces a particular gas odorant into LPG so that leakages will be detected promptly. Conventionally, stenching operations had been carried out on shore largely, whilst even when done on carriers, the operations are highly risky, cumbersome, complex, expensive, and with little-to-no mobility. 

However, the PADS system has revolutionised the industry by providing an efficient and innovative solution that addresses these challenges. 

The PADS system, designed and fabricated in-house by Intertek Caleb Brett, is a patented pneumatics system that is highly compact and five times smaller in size than conventional systems. Additionally, it offers higher safety ability, lower operation cost, and short turnaround time for each operation, whether for use in terminals or offshore operations.

It is low maintenance, highly portable, and safe allowing for quick and easy deployment anywhere in the world. It assists clients in odorising their cargo at short notice, making it a game-changer in the industry. 

Intertek Caleb Brett has been a leader globally in stenching, and the PADS system has proven to be greatly successful with over 500 activities operated and still counting. The company has built up strong relationships with gas-odorant suppliers and LPG clients, with many interests in securing the PADS system.
