PUB to invest $190 in flood mitigation projects

This includes the construction of a detention tank in Little India.

PUB will invest $190m in six projects in 2020 to mitigate inland floods caused by climate change, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli said in the Committee of Supply Debate.

This includes the construction of a detention tank underneath Syed Alwi Road, which aims to enhance flood protection in the Little India area.

The investments will also be complemented with technological developments like short-range radars, designed to better predict and manage heavier rainfall.

As announced in the Budget speech, a Coastal and Flood Protection Fund will be set up within PUB, with an initial funding of $5b. Some of the near-term investments they will make will focus on studying coastal areas to ascertain the type, feasibility and extent of measures required, starting with the City to East Coast stretch and Jurong Island.

The funds will also be used to expand and improve the city’s drainage infrastructure. They will also seek out opportunities for urban development, like the reclamation of islands offshore, and the connecting of these islands up by building barrages.
