CDL, NUS tie-up to explore smart, green building in Singapore

CDL has rolled out $2.25m for two laboratories.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Design and Environment and City Developments Limited (CDL) have teamed up to promote innovations in smart, green building technologies.

According to the two parties’ joint release, CDL gifted NUS $2.25m to establish two new research laboratories dedicated to the study of smart building technologies for indoor and outdoor environments, and to provide funding for research projects.

With the support of Economic Development Board (EDB), these initiatives, are expected to improve quality of life in the country, as well as entrench Singapore’s position as a smart city.

NUS-CDL Smart Green Home, the first of the two facilities, is slated for completion by December 2017. The facility will be designed as a venue for the exploration of smart home innovations in both a real-life and a “plug-and-play” environment. It will also allow researchers to experiment with the technology-human interface.

NUS-CDL T² Lab, the second facility, will be an indoor-outdoor research space expected to be completed by December 2016. The 107 sqm space will be used to study the integration of passive and active building systems to reduce substantially carbon emissions. It will also explore the adaptability of the Singapore home to ageing, safety and security, work-life balance, and social and cultural expectations.
