SATS reduces food waste to 2.3% in FY2023

The company eyes using 100% sustainable food packaging by 2030.

SATS has reduced its food waste intensity to 2.3% in FY2023, from a baseline of 4.1% in FY2021, the company’s latest sustainability report showed.

The company said that it has been tracking food waste generated in its kitchens since 2020, using an AI-enabled waste tracking system. This has enabled the company to improve their material planning and reduce waste generated in their food production, SATS said.

“We have implemented the use of a similar AI-enabled food waste tracking system in our newly opened Tianjin kitchen,” the company said in its sustainability report.

SATS added that the same food waste tracking service will be extended to its customers. Beginning last July, SATS will help Singapore Airlines track unconscumed meals from inbound flights into Singapore, which it expects will help SIA and SATS improve menu and demand planning to reduce wastage.

Group Emissions
Group emissions have fallen by 7.1% in FY2023 compared to the baseline in FY2020, SATS’ report showed. The company targets to cut group emissions by 50% by 2030.

SATS has also converted 38% of its ground support equipment to cleaner energy sources, the report stated.

The company further shared that it has generate 11,000 MWh of renewable energy in 2022, which it says is the most extensive solar PV system at Changi Airport

SATS has set a goal of using 100% sustainable food packaging by 2030. In line with this, it revealed that it has formed a sustainable packaging task force and developed new rules in packaging to guide in its choice of packaging materials to use.

“While we work towards the goal of developing and delivering packaging that is designed for circularity, we are seizing every opportunity to switch to using sustainable materials. For example, in China, our Beijing Airport Inflight Kitchen (BAIK) is using wooden cutlery with paper packaging for inflight meals in line with regulatory requirements,” SATS said.
