Keppel Infrastructure, PUB open Singapore's fourth desalination plant

KMEDP can produce 137,000 cubic metres of fresh drinking water daily.

Singapore has opened its fourth desalination plant, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP), under the partnership of Keppel Infrastructure and PUB, Singapore’s national water agency.

KMEDP is Singapore’s first large-scale, dual-mode desalination plant and is capable of producing 137,000 cubic metres of fresh drinking water per day. It can either treat seawater or rainwater drawn from the Marina Reservoir, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, strengthening Singapore’s water supply resilience.

The plant commenced commercial operations in June 2020 for a 25-year concession period under the Design, Build, Own and Operate arrangement.

PUB chief executive Ng Joo Hee described that seawater desalination is a “practically limitless source” and is weather-resistant.

“The availability of desalination makes Singapore’s water supply immensely resilient," he said.

Meanwhile, Keppel Infrastructure CEO Ong Tiong Guan mentioned that the company is pleased to support the Singapore government in strengthening water supply.

“The development and operation of the KMEDP is very much in line with Keppel’s Vision 2030, which envisages the group providing environmental solutions to contribute to sustainable urbanisation,” he said.
