Singapore to host top global water convention's finale

Black & Veatch leaders and technical experts to focus on “partnership” with Singapore at SIWW.

The final session of Black & Veatch’s global series of water reuse roundtables concludes at this year’s Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). The event marks the final stop of a four-country series that included six industry dialogue sessions held in Paris, Brisbane, Chicago, Orlando, Washington, D.C., and Singapore, according to a Black & Veatch report.

The Singapore session will feature highly acclaimed U.S. environmental author, Professor Robert Glennon, who will open the session on Wednesday, 30 June. Black & Veatch executives will host approximately one dozen other leaders from the public and private sector to discuss “Overcoming Barriers to Water Reuse in an Integrated Water Portfolio.”

“Singapore was chosen as the final location for this dialogue because the country serves as a best-practice model in adaptive water management,” said Dan McCarthy, President and CEO of Black & Veatch’s global water business. “The session will conclude an enlightening series of conversations that have helped our partners learn more about the challenges we collectively face to resolve.”

As one of the original founding members of SIWW, Black & Veatch has been partnering with Singapore to develop innovative and sustainable water solutions since 1922. The company announced its line up of partnership activities for SIWW 2010, recognising the common purpose that transcends all boundaries to ensure sustainable and clean water supply. Black & Veatch believes that industry can create new partnerships at international forums like SIWW, prompt multi-party discussion and discover collaborative new solutions.

Black & Veatch is building on the popularity of its event blog, www.SIWWDIARY.com, which attracted thousands of international visitors in 2009. This year the blog will gather impressions from the SIWW 2010 event as well as activities around it and encourage public discussion about water through postings from water industry partners, Black & Veatch professionals and Singaporean media students. Dozens of students from the School of Film & Media Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic will take part in an assignment to report on events during the Week through posts published on the blog. Black & Veatch is collaborating closely with the school and PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, on this innovative, new social media project.

Black & Veatch will participate in a full program of activities through SIWW 2010:

  • Len Rodman, Black & Veatch Chairman, President and CEO, will co-chair the America’s Business Forum on 1 July. Rodman is a member of Singapore’s Environmental and Water Technologies International Advisory Panel and was one of last year’s three keynote speakers.
  • Dan McCarthy will be a panelist in the Australia Business Forum on 1 July for the second year running. McCarthy also serves on the nomination committee for the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize.
  • Cindy Wallis-Lage, Senior Vice President and Executive Managing Director of Technical Solutions, Black & Veatch; Alan Man, Vice President and Managing Director of Black & Veatch’s North Asia Pacific water business; and Malcolm Brandt, Water Infrastructure Global Practice Leader for Black & Veatch, will chair sessions during the Water Convention.
  • Expert Black & Veatch water/wastewater technology leaders presenting at the Water Convention include Malcolm Brandt, James Currie, Christina Hartinger, Les Lampe and Cindy Wallis-Lage.

During the week, conference participants will have the opportunity to tour plant sites in which Black & Veatch has played a major consultancy role, including Marina Barrage, the Sembcorp NEWater Plant and the Hyflux’s Singspring Desalination Plant.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
