SMRT adds wheelchair accessible buses on 6 more routes

The new routes connect passengers to MRT and LRT.

In a press release, SMRT said that to better serve passengers in wheelchairs, from 15 November 2012, it will introduce Wheelchair Accessible Bus (WAB) services on six more service routes: Service 167, 859, 860, 966, 980 and 985.

These bring the total number of WAB services that SMRT Buses operates to 27.

The six new WAB service routes will connect passengers to MRT and LRT stations including Bras Basah, City Hall, Dhoby Ghaut, Esplanade, Newton, Novena, Orchard, Pending, Raffles Place and Tanjong Pagar. Services 167, 966, 980 and 985 will also call at medical facilities such as Assisi Hospice, Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic, KK Women’s and Children Hospital, Mount Alvernia Hospital, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, National Cancer Centre, National Dental Centre, National Eye Centre, National Heart Centre, Outram Polyclinic, Ren Ci Community Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Thomson Medical Centre and Woodlands Polyclinic.

Currently, 349 buses or about 30.9 per cent of SMRT’s bus fleet are wheelchair accessible. Every SMRT WAB bus can accommodate at least one wheelchair and a blue decal showing a passenger in wheelchair is prominently displayed at the front of the bus. There are also two decals on the front doors seeking passengers'understanding and patience while our Service Leader attends to a passenger(s) in wheelchair first.
