MOT: No fare hikes in 2012

Plus there will be a 20% increase in the public bus fleet.

A government report said:

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said more trains will be added to cater to future demand; 18 for the North-East Line (NEL) and 16 for the Circle Line (CCL). The trains are due to arrive from 2015. For the North-South and East-West Lines, there will be 13 additional trains by around 2014. 13 trains will also be procured for the Tuas West Extension due for completion in 2016.

Bus service levels will also be improved under the Bus Services Enhancement Programme (BSEP) which will commence this year. Commuters can expect less crowding, shorter waiting times and new routes with the addition of 550 buses. There will be no profits for PTOs as Government's funding of these buses will pay the operating costs and the revenue derived will be recovered.

To achieve greater level of parity between bus and rail financing framework, the Government will also bear the development and land costs for bus depots and bus parking infrastructure, and lease these to bus operators at a nominal fee. Minister Lui also said that there will be no public transport fare adjustments this year.
