Malaysian envoy to discuss HSR project by late July

They have failed to reply to a diplomatic note sent by Singapore in June.

Malaysia will send its official representative to Singapore by late July to discuss the High-Speed Rail (HSR), Malaysian economic affairs minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali revealed.

"We will meet with my counterpart in Singapore soon and will discuss the details," he told reporters after his speech in the EU-Malaysia Trade and Investment Forum 2018.

According to the state’s Bernama news agency, Azmin said an announcement with regards to HSR should be expected this week.

"I'm in the communication with our Singaporean counterpart,” Ali commented. “Last week, I was briefed by our Attorney-General and presented the case (to the Cabinet) on Wednesday.”

In May, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad announced that they will cancel the HSR project as it would not benefit the country. However, no formal notification has been sent to Singapore of the said plan.

Singapore transport minister Khaw Boon Wan said in Parliament that the neighbouring country has left no reply to a diplomatic note sent on 1 June to clarify the issue.

The Lion City has already spent over $250m for the project by May 2018 and has said that it intends to demand for compensation in case the project will really be terminated.
