LTA promises free wi-fi for MRT and LRT stations by 2020

The transport authority is one step closer to providing an ‘always connected’ journey for Singaporean commuters who finds it a necessity to check their e-mails, read the news, and update their social media accounts during commutes.

According to a statement by the LTA, commuters today will be able to connect to free wi-fi coverage at the final five of the 33 pilot stations (Buangkok, Kovan, Little India, Paya Lebar and Potong Pasir).

LTA says they have recorded 700,000 logins to the free wi-fi service daily, quadrupling the count since the launch of the first three stations in August 2014.

“We are very encouraged by the growing usage of the WiFi service at MRT nodes,” said Mrs Rosine Howe-Teo, group director for innovation and infocomm technology at LTA.

Meanwhile, the LTA says they plan to use the data from the wi-fi connectivity to gain insights on crowd behaviour and improve the delivery of their transport services.
