e-scooters banned from footpaths

They are now only limited to 440km of cycling paths and PCNs.

Riding electric scooters or e-scooters are now prohibited from all footpaths in Singapore, announced the Land Transportation Authority. Instead, e-scooters are now only limited to cycling paths and Park Connector Networks (PCN), which spans 440 km throughout the island.

An advisory period starting 5 November until 31 December will be adopted to give time for e-scooter users to adjust. A zero tolerance approach will be taken starting 1 January 2020. Offenders are liable for fines up to $2,000 and may face imprisonment of up to 3 months, if convicted, said LTA.

Offences relating to errant behaviour and incidents involving e-scooters remained on an upward trend despite LTA’s efforts to “encourage the responsible use of these devices through education, enforcement, regulations and infrastructural enhancements,” the release stated. Following a safety review, the LTA decided to ban all e-scooters from footpaths.

Bicycles and Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs), such as motorised wheelchairs, will continue to be allowed on footpaths, cycling paths and PCNs.
