Daily Briefing: Ryde applies for courier services trial; LTA defends new PMD safety standard

Ryde has submitted a proposal to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to be part of trials for private hire car and taxi drivers to courier small items, with Grab – the largest private hire operator here – understood to be putting together its proposition as well.

Addressing these concerns in its proposal, Ryde said it would restrict the number of courier jobs that drivers can take in a day to ensure there are enough drivers to pick up passengers.

Ryde CEO Terence Zou also stressed that the operator is not intending to function as a delivery or logistics company.

The new UL2272 safety standard is "a necessary step" that needs to be taken to reduce the risk of fires involving personal mobility devices (PMD), the Land Transport Authority said on Thursday (Sep 13), even while it acknowledged that the requirement will affect retailers in the immediate term.

All motorised PMDs must meet the UL2272 fire safety standard by 2021 to ensure public safety, Senior Minister of State for Transport Lam Pin Min said in Parliament on Monday.
