Are taxi shortages now a thing of the past?

LTA says its Taxi framework spiked cab numbers.

It’s now time to stop worrying about not being able to catch a cab as you hurry towards somewhere. The Land Transportation Authority reported a spike in the percentage of taxis on the roads during peak hours, reaching 91% for the first nine months of 2015.

According to a statement by the LTA, 2,000 more taxis are now available for hire by commuters during these dreaded peak hours, thanks to the Taxi Availability framework which was first implemented on the very first day of 2013.

“Over the same period, the percentage of taxis plying at least 250km daily has also increased, from 75% to 81%. The daily taxi utilisation rate, or the proportion of total taxi mileage under hire, has likewise increased, from about 65% in 2013 to 66% in the first nine months of 2015,” the statement said.

According to the LTA, the numbers reveal that more taxis have been traversing the roads to serve even more commuters, and taxis are being more efficiently utilised.
