$15.6b Singapore-KL rail project likely to be in Tuas West or Jurong East

It'll be built by 2020.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has underscored the partnership between Singapore and Malaysia when he spoke at the press conference on Monday.

He was speaking to the media after the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.

He stressed that the bilateral ties between Malaysia and Singapore has been progressing well. Outlining the various projects between the two countries, PM Lee said that they are making progress on the High Speed Rail project.
“It is a very major project, and there are still many issues to work out. It will keep us busy for the next few years. When completed, it will bring our countries closer together,” he said.

PM Lee shared that Tuas West and Jurong East are candidates for the location of the $15.6b rail project which is targeted to be built by 2020. A third alternative option is in the city which might, however, require bigger cost.

PM lee noted that there are many items yet to be discussed with regards to the multi-billion project including the design, financing, governance, operations, security and immigration requirements, and legal arrangements.

Additionally, PM Lee said that he has also reviewed the progress of Iskandar Malaysia (IM) along with PM Najib.
“We look forward to more cooperation on industrial and manufacturing activities between Singapore and IM. Such investments are win-win as they will create more and better jobs for both our peoples,” he said.
