Tighter e-bike requirements to roll out on 1 February

They align with standards in 33 European countries.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA)’s bid to improve road safety power-assisted bicycle (PAB) users, other road users, and other pedestrians will begin on 1 February, when implementation of tighter technical requirements for PABs begins.

Moreover, sellers and users of non-compliant PABs will also see harsher penalties for not meeting the requirements aligned with European Standard EN15194.

The revised requirements specify safety requirements such as those for electric circuits, batteries, power management, and maximum power. The standard is applied in 33 countries across Europe and in Australia.

Only PABs that adopt the new requirements and weigh no more than 20 kg will see approval and be affixed with a seal for use on public roads.
