Marina Bay cycling network begins first phase construction

2.5 kilometers of cycling paths will be made along Marina Boulevard, Bayfront Avenue and Marina Gardens Drive.

Work for the first phase is expected to be completed by 1Q13, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a release, after which the rest of the 14.5 kilometers of cycling network will push through.

"The rest of the cycling network in Marina Bay will be developed in tandem with the development of the area. By 2014, cyclists can look forward to 16 km of cycling paths within Marina Bay.," said LTA.

"When fully completed, the cycling network in Marina Bay will enhance cyclists' experience to nearby attractions like the Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. It will also enhance the area's draw as a recreational and leisure destination amongst Singaporeans and tourists," said Dr Chin Kian Keong, Group Director, Road Operations and Community Partnership, LTA.

"Certain sections of the cycling network along Marina Boulevard and Bayfront Avenue will be marked by distinctive metallic path markers with an embossed bicycle icon. Placed at intervals, these markers provide a subtle segregation between the cycling path and the pedestrian walkway fronting some developments. Similar markers have been used in Belgium and Spain," said LTA.

"Apart from the 16km of cycling network at Marina Bay, a total of about 50km of cycling path network have been planned for seven HDB towns - Bedok, Changi-Simei, Pasir Ris, Sembawang, Taman Jurong, Tampines and Yishun. As at May 2012, 6.4km of path in these towns has been completed. Works on the remaining cycling network will commence progressively from May 2012 and is expected to complete by 2014," it added.
