This weak spot kept Singapore from being the smartest city in the world

It trailed behind Copenhagen by 0.41 points.

Singapore is considered the second smartest city in the world and trailed just right after Copenhagen, Swedish transport firm EasyPark revealed. It scored 7.83 points out of 10 overall whilst Copenhagen scored 8.24 points.

In its Smart Cities Index, the researchers looked at data on more than 500 cities worldwide on 19 factors.

Singapore shined in transport and mobility clinching a perfect 10 due to satisfaction with public transport. However, traffic problems hounded Singapore’s rankings with a low 4.20.

Sustainability is Singapore’s weakest spot, registering its lowest score in terms of clean energy with 2.26. It scored 8.44 in terms of smart planning.

"A smart city is sustainable, with a focus on clean energy and environmental projection," the firm said.

The Lion City got another perfect ten for citizen participation, but got average scores in terms of education and digitalisation of government with 5.12 and 5.47, respectively.

Singapore's score for its innovation economy hit 8.62, but it is the lowest amongst the top five countries, such as Boston's 10 and Stockholm's 9.57.

It also scored high in terms of digitalisation. It was graded 8.71 in terms of its 4G LTE and 7.75 in terms of internet speed.

"We discovered that such a city should be digitalised first and foremost—with 4G, plentiful Wi-Fi hotspots and high smartphone usage," EasyPark commented.

The next factor, living standard, measured average sum spent on basic needs and average net salary adjusted to the GDP per capita levels. Singapore scored 8.18.

The last factor, expert perception, was based on smart city ratings from 20,000 technology and urban planning journalists. Singapore scored 9.30, one of the highest it has earned in the study.

Cities' scores in transport and mobility, digitalisation, governance, and expert perception weighed the heaviest in the final computation.
