StarHub unveils first mesh network of connected vehicles

It’s in collaboration with ComfortDelGro and Veniam.

As part of building an extensive test-lab for developers and researchers, StarHub rolled out first mesh network of connected vehicles pilot on National University of Singapore (NUS) Kent Ridge campus.

The launch was in partnership with transport group ComfortDelGro and Veniam, the company responsible for Internet of Moving Things.

The mesh platform leverages vehicles as mobile Wi-Fi access points that connect to one another and to fixed points in the buildings across the NUS campus.

This approach extends overall Wi-Fi network coverage and also enables Internet of Things (IoT) devices to be connected seamlessly.

With the launch, NUS staff and students can access Wi-Fi while travelling on all NUS campus shuttle buses.

StarHub's Innovation, Investment, Incubation Head Stephen Lee said the platform allows commercial partners to leverage on data generated from the said network to analyse and address urban challenges facing Singapore logistics and transportation companies.

"We look forward to working with more commercial partners to expand the network to other parts of Singapore and find new ways to analyse and utilise the data collected in order to address various urban concerns and challenges facing the transportation and logistics industry,” Lee said.

More so, the generated data will be used by NUS to better better understand commuting and mobility trends on campus, and provide insights into its management of campus operations and services.
