SingTel responds to OpenNet media release

SingTel and OpenNet are currently involved in disputes over the contractual arrangements for the NextGen NBN.

On 8 May 2012 OpenNet said it is scheduled to complete its obligations to roll out fibre to 95% of all Singapore premises by July 2012.

On 9 May 2012 Singapore Telecommunications Limited issued the following statement in response to the OpenNet media release:

In 2008, OpenNet, a consortium in which SingTel owns a 30%-stake, was awarded the contract to rollout fibre services under the government-funded Next Gen Nationwide Broadband Network (NextGen NBN) in Singapore. For the rollout, OpenNet utilises part of SingTel’s existing infrastructure, comprising ducts, manholes and exchanges.

Leveraging SingTel’s existing infrastructure and experience, with SingTel as the key subcontractor for the fibre rollout, OpenNet was able to achieve a rollout that exceeded the requirements of the government’s iN2015 blueprint in terms of design and timeline. The use of SingTel’s infrastructure significantly minimised costs and disruption to the community.

SingTel was instrumental in enabling OpenNet to fulfill its obligations under the rollout timetable, including coverage of more than 90% of homes and businesses in Singapore. The program is also on target to achieve 95% rollout coverage by July 2012.

To cater to demand for installations to homes and businesses, including demand spikes during IT shows, SingTel proactively offered additional appointment slots to assist OpenNet.

SingTel and OpenNet are currently involved in disputes over certain aspects of the contractual arrangements between the parties and are resolving the disputes in the appropriate manner and in accordance with the contracts.

SingTel has and will continue to fulfill its contractual obligations as the key sub-contractor for the NextGen NBN.
