Singapore to stop 3G services on 31 July 2024

Mobile operators will take proactive measures to help 3G users shift to newer networks.

Mobile operators M1, Singtel, and StarHub will retire all 3G services starting on 31 July 2024, including voice messaging and data.

In a joint statement, the mobile operators said 3G networks are no longer widely used in the country as only a small percentage are using it, comprising users on older devices or SIM cards that cannot connect to newer networks.

“With the retirement of 3G networks, mobile operators will be able to repurpose some of the freed-up spectrum to improve 5G services, which offer faster speeds, higher data throughput, as well as enhanced security and reliability,” the statement read.

“Proactive” measures will be implemented to encourage 3G users to transition and extend help in migrating. Customers who are using 3G only or early-release 4G may choose from a wide-range of 4G and 5G handsets available.

Meanwhile, those using 3G-only SIM cards may contact their operator’s website to learn about upgrading.

Mobile operators have been reaching out to 3G customers over the last few years to migrate to 4G and 5G mobile networks.
