Security loophole: M1 in the spotlight for potential security breach

The incident’s root cause is still unknown.

The local rush to get the newest iPhones came to an abrupt halt for M1 customers on Monday, after the telco suspended iPhone pre-orders following a potential security breach.

Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus were temporarily suspended at about 7pm on Monday night, and resumed at 7am on Tuesday morning.

“As a precaution to protect our customers’ personal information, we temporarily suspended pre-orders at about 7pm on Monday night, after a potential security breach was highlighted to us,” said Chua Hian Hou, Assistant General Manager, Corporate Communications, M1, told SBR today.

M1 is now working with the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) to ascertain the cause of the breach.

“We are currently investigating the root cause of the incident. M1 places the utmost priority in protecting our customer data and privacy and has implemented strict processes and procedures to safeguard customer information, such as regular security audits. We take the incident seriously and will be conducting a full review on this incident. We will cooperate fully in addressing the PDPC's concerns,” he added.
