Tuas Port to be world’s largest fully automated port by 2042: PM Lee

The port uses driverless vehicles and AI.

Tuas Port will be the largest fully automated port in the world 20 years from now, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.

In his National Day Rally speech, Lee gave an update on the progress of Tuas Port, a decade after it was first announced

According to the prime minister, Phase I of Tuas Port has just been completed, with Phases II, III and IV to soon follow.

“When fully completed around 20 years from now, Tuas Port will handle 65 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually – almost double today’s volumes. We will have the world’s largest fully automated port, and that should make us a leading global player in the maritime space,” Lee said.

Some of the modernisation that will be expected in the port will be the use of automated and digitalised processes, and the use of AI to coordinate operations such as vessel traffic management and port clearance more seamlessly.

Phase I reclamation works of Tuas Port began on February 15 and were completed in November 2021.

Lee said that the move to Tuas will free up prime waterfront land from Shenton Way to Pasir Panjang for the future Greater Southern Waterfront.
