Singapore to benefit from the robust expansion of Shanghai's container port

Shanghai overtook Singapore as the world's busiest container port in 2010 but Shanghai's pole position was not achieved at Singapore's expense.

According to Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Second Minister for Finance and Transport, Singapore had the position as the world's busiest container port since 2005. However, Shanghai overtook Singapore last year.

As China's import and export volume increases, it can be expected that Shanghai and the other gateway ports in China will continue to expand in tandem. Shanghai's pole position was not achieved at Singapore's expense.

Mrs Lim Hwee Hua said: "In fact, China's prosperity will continue to be a plus for us as a significant portion of our container comes from or goes to destinations in China."

Singapore, as a major transhipment hub, is well-placed to capture the growing trade volumes of the rest of Asia. This is borne out by the 10% rise in Singapore's container volumes last year.
