Sembmarine seals two renewable energy contracts worth over $200m

It will engineer and construct projects for Denmark’s Ørsted Wind Power and Norway’s Norled AS.

Sembcorp Marine (Sembmarine) secured two separate renewable energy engineering solutions projects worth over $200m, an announcement revealed.

The firm inked an agreement with Danish energy company Ørsted Wind Power, a subsidiary of Optimus Wind, to engineer and construct two topsides that will be deployed to UK’s Hornsea 2 Offshore Wind Farm in Q1 of 2021, Sembmarine said.

Hornsea 2 Offshore Wind Farm is said to be the world’s biggest wind farm once it is operational in 2022 and is capable of supplying ‘green electricity’ to over 1.3 million households in the UK.

“We are very grateful to Ørsted and Optimus for the contract, and for the opportunity to progress further in the competitive offshore renewable energy market,” Samuel Wong, head of offshore platforms at Sembmarine, said.

Meanwhile, Sembmarine also inked a contract with Norwegian shipping company Norled AS to design and construct three identical battery-powered roll on/roll off passenger (ropax) ferries which will be delivered in Q4 2020.

The ropax ferries will use lithium-ion batteries for propulsion which will be complemented by energy-efficient solutions throughout the vessels’ design and shore-side hydroelectricity recharging points along the service route, the announcement said.

The 84.2m long multi-deck, double-ended vessels which can carry up to 300 passengers as well as 80 cars will be built to a proprietary design from Sembmarine’s subsidiary LMG Marin.
