Ong Ye Kung eyes global maritime decarbonisation centre in Singapore
Public consultations will be held to develop the Maritime Singapore Decarbonisation Blueprint 2050 by year end, the transport minister added.
To compliment the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) is coming up with the Singapore Decarbonisation Blueprint 2050.
Minister of Transport Ong Ye Kung, speaking at the 15th Singapore Maritime Week Opening Ceremony, said this could include the establishment of a global maritime decarbonisation centre, based on the proposal of the International Advisory Panel on Maritime Decarbonisation.
"One proposal by the panel is to establish a global maritime decarbonisation centre in Singapore, where a cluster of like-minded stakeholders can coordinate, drive, and catalyse maritime decarbonisation solutions. I think this is a worthwhile, strategically important initiative," Ong said.
He added that the MPA is the agency tasked to set up the centre, with the support of key industry players.
As for the blueprint, public consultations will be launched to help outline Singapore's long-term strategies for sustainability.
"Maritime Singapore must contribute to the national and global sustainability agenda. As a major transhipment hub, we are already contributing significantly to carbon emission reduction, because using a transhipment hub is the most efficient way to run the global supply network," Ong said.
