MPA seeks compensation from Marine Honour for oil spill damages

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is pursuing compensation from Marine Honour for pollution damage resulting from an oil spill by its tanker in Singapore waters.

MPA said Marine Honour is liable for pollution damage caused by the oil spill from its tanker in Singapore waters under the Merchant Shipping (Civil Liability and Compensation for Oil Pollution) Act 1998.

Marine Honour is also liable for the costs incurred from the at-sea and on-shore clean-ups done by Singapore government agencies.

The owner of the Marine Honour can seek recourse against third parties for pollution liability.

“The spirit of the 'polluter pays' principle simplifies the claims process by having a clear party against which to pursue claims without potential complications of proving fault,” the MPA said.
