MPA and AirX to trial wing-in-ground craft off Changi coast

Trials are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2024.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is collaborating with ST Engineering AirX (AirX), a joint venture company with Peluca (formerly known as Wigetworks), to conduct trials of the AirFish Wing-in-Ground (WIG) craft in Singapore. 

This partnership aims to explore the potential of WIG technology in maritime transportation and logistics services. AirX plans to trial both single-engine and dual-engine AirFish 8 prototypes, capable of accommodating up to 8 passengers each. 

Operating just above the sea surface and utilising ground effect, these vessels are said to adhere to guidelines set by the International Maritime Organization, employing the same collision avoidance rules as conventional ships.

To facilitate these trials, MPA will collaborate with AirX to identify a suitable area off Changi, Singapore. Measures will be implemented to ensure that port operations remain unaffected, including advanced notification to vessels and the public to keep clear of the trial area.

These trials are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2024, with a frequency of twice monthly. Additionally, the establishment of an Engineering and Certification Centre of Excellence for WIG in Singapore aims to attract professionals into the maritime domain.

AirX will also work with classification societies to fulfil compliance requirements for an Approval in Principle (AiP), a crucial milestone for the classification of the WIG craft as a maritime vessel before commencing commercial operations. 

The AiP will validate the craft's compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
