Sembcorp inks deal to develop 3D printing, drone technologies

Tests will be done for the construction and inspection of ship parts.

Sembcorp Marine signed a memorandum of understanding with technology manufacturers institutions to develop applications in 3D printing, drone, and digital twin technologies for the offshore & marine (O&M) sector.

According to a press release, Sembcorp Marine signed the deal with DNV GL, A*STAR's Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) to focus on three developmental areas.

The four will collaborate on developing and certifying Laser Aided Manufacturing technology, or 3D printing, in creating large structures for newbuild vessels. It will be funded by NAMIC and is expected to last for nine months.

The second project will involve Sembcorp Marine providing DNV GL the test-bed to develop ship inspection by drones.

Lastly, Sembcorp Marine will provide DNV GL with the test-case and user acceptance for investigating the digital replica of an actual ship through simulation.
