Piracy incidence in Singapore Strait sinks

Only 5 incidents are recorded so far this year.

The Singapore Strait, having been the busiest shipping route in the world, has suffered from the threat of piracy for many years now, with 74 incidents recorded in 2015.

However, according to the latest report of the BMI Research, the number of piracy incidence in the said strait dwindled, with only five cases reported in the year so far.

The report noted that the typical tactics used by pirates operating in the Singapore Strait is the siphoning of fuels which they sell onto the black market.

The trend seen in Singapore is reflective of the worldwide trend, as global piracy incidence capsized to 34 cases for the first quarter this year. This is way below the 54 cases reported in the same period last year.

"A greater collaborative effort between governments has been a large factor in turning the tide against the pirates, with national navies working closer together," the report noted.
