The heat is on: This office literally gets a bit hot for their green drive

Discover how they execute their green initiatives in the office.

The regional office of leading ship classification society, DNV GL, houses the company’s operations for Singapore and the surrounding APAC region.

Located in Science Park 1, the regional office is aimed at creating greater synergies across its four business areas. It is designed to accommodate the 20 years of ‘predicted growth’ for DNV and up to 600 employees.

According to Richard Bailey, country chair of DNV Singapore and director of Division for APAC and Middle East, Oil and Gas, the DNV GL Technology Centre is a built-to-suit development by Ascendas, to showcase the “We Walk the Talk!” motto of DNV GL to their clients.

The company’s base building of DNV has achieved Green Mark Gold Plus certification while Green Mark Platinum certification has been awarded for its office interiors, in line with DNV GL’s corporate Vision, Mission and Values.

Richard adds that besides the highest standard of GreenMark, DNV’s design objective is to create a modern and high technology office to correspond with their brand’s leading position in technology. Flexibility is the company’s other objective which they have achieved in their new office - that is being able to accommodate potential organizational change and adapt to the fluctuation of the business environment.

To achieve the GreenMark certification, the office combines intelligent building structures and efficient energy consumption. DNV GL also put in place some green initiatives for the building, which includes: the Central air conditioning set at 25oC for energy efficiency; The implementation of motion-based sensors for energy efficient lighting control; Waste management which entails individual waste paper bins being replaced by central general and recycling waste collection areas; and Reduction in paper use: badge and password-access printing to limit waste

Richard adds that to overcome the challenges in designing the office, they considered both long term and short term needs in the overall concept planning. They also had a Steering Committee to take on the responsibility of aligning internal requirements and communicating the final design concept to their teams. Elaborate planning and cooperation from the Project Consultant team as well as various fit-out contractors plus excellent support from the top management in decision making certainly helped overcome challenges with time and resources.

Richard reiterates that for the entire project team to be involved in a project of such scale has been a rewarding experience for them. He even adds that their appreciation goes to their landlord, Ascendas, consultant team, and contractors for their quality work and quick response in making the project happen.
