Singapore to be first in Southeast Asia to roll out Samsung Pay

It launches on 16 June.

Just in time for the Great Singapore Sale, MasterCard has announced that Samsung Pay will hit the city-state on 16 June.

According to a news release by Mastercard, Singapore will be the first market in Southeast Asian to enjoy the e-wallet.

Consumers will be able to use Samsung Pay almost anywhere credit and debit cards are accepted. Users only need to register their card details on select Samsung phones with Near Field Communication (NFC) wireless technology.

For both retailers and consumers, purchases made using Samsung Pay offers all the benefits and guarantees of a transactions made with the physical MasterCard card.

Deborah Heng, group head and general manager of MasterCard Singapore, notes that digital wallets have seen the fastest uptake amongst Singapore consumers with a four-fold increase, compared to a year before.

“The availability of Samsung Pay will see consumers tapping Singapore’s comprehensive contactless payment infrastructure to make purchases simply, swiftly and safely, a phenomena that is only set to grow as Singapore’s digitally savvy population become increasingly receptive to using mobile payments for all purchases,” Heng added.
