Domestic wholesale trade dipped 3.8% in 4Q12

Due to sliding sales of petroleum.

According to Department of Statistics, domestic wholesale trade (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.5% in fourth quarter 2012 over third quarter 2012. Excluding petroleum, domestic wholesale trade rose 1.8%. After removing price effect, domestic wholesale trade increased 2.3% quarter-on-quarter.

Compared to the same period a year ago, domestic wholesale trade dropped 3.8% in fourth quarter 2012, partly attributed to a decline in domestic sales of petroleum &
petroleum products.

Excluding petroleum, domestic wholesale trade decreased by a smaller 1.7% compared to fourth quarter 2011.

However, after adjusting for price changes, domestic wholesale trade registered a 1.2% increase over fourth quarter 2011.

After seasonal adjustment, the telecommunications & computers sector reported an increase of 9.3% in domestic sales over third quarter 2012.

Higher domestic sales were also reported by the ship chandlers & bunkering (8.2%), timber, paints & construction materials (3.5%) and electronic components (0.9%) sectors.

In contrast, the household equipment & furniture sector registered a decrease of 7.9% in domestic sales over the previous quarter. Other sectors that reported lower domestic sales included transport equipment (-3.4%), petroleum & petroleum products (-2.3%), food,beverages & tobacco (-2.1%), general wholesale trade (-0.7%), industrial & construction machinery (-0.6%) and chemicals & chemical products (-0.4%).

On a year-on-year basis, the petroleum & petroleum products sector experienced a decline of 6.3% in domestic sales. After adjusting for price changes, the decrease was smaller at 1.0%.

Other sectors that reported year-on-year declines in nominal value but recorded growth after adjusting for price changes included industrial & c onstruction machinery, ship chandlers & bunkering, telecommunications & computers and general wholesale trade.

Both the household equipment & furniture and chemicals & chemical products sectors recorded an increase of 6.7% in domestic sales compared to the same period a year ago.

The timber, paints & construction materials, food, beverages & tobacco and electronic components sectors also grew by between 1.2% and 4.0%.
