Android Pay makes Asian debut in Singapore

Over 30,000 payment readers currently support mobile payments.

Android Pay today landed in Singapore, making the city-state the first market in Asia to be able to use the digital wallet.

According to a press release by MasterCard, DBS/POSB, OCBC, and Standard Chartered will be the first banks to support Android Pay in Singapore, with UOB soon to follow. MasterCard shares that Android Pay users can begin making mobile payments at over 30,000 contactless payment readers in Singapore.

Android Pay allows MasterCard credit and debit cardholders to use their Android smartphones for everyday purchases in-store and within Android apps.

Owners of Android devices, such as smartphone and tablets, running on Android 4.4+ or newer start using Android Pay for contactless as well as in-app payments. To shop with Apple Pay, MasterCard holders need only download the app and set up their account.

Meanwhile, to pay in store, consumers must wake their smartphone, and hold it near the payment terminal at any location that accepts contactless payments.
