70,000 households to get free LED lights

Only 28% of one-room and two-room HDB flats households use LED lights.

More than 70,000 households with one-room and two-room HDB units across Singapore will be eligible to the $25 voucher distributed by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Hong Kah North Grassroots Organisation to redeem LED lights, an announcement revealed.

In August, the Switch and Save - Use LED (SSUL) programme was launched in the Northeast District for the progressive rollout of the programme.

According to a study by NEA, only 28% of one-room and two-room HDB households adopted the use of LED lights, which is lower compared to the average 53% LED adoption rate for other housing types.

The $25 SSUL vouchers which can cover the cost of four to five LED bulbs can be used to redeem LED lights at any Home-Fix, Selffix and Sheng Siong stores across Singapore. They can also be used at Philips Light Lab and SSUL roadshows organised by NEA.

According to NEA, a total of 438,000 kWh could be saved annually if all eligible one-room and two-room HDB flats in Hong Kah North and North East District switch to LED lights.

“This is equivalent to more than $88,000 in energy savings, or enough electricity to power 220 one- or two-room flats for a year,” the agency explained. “The energy saved would also result in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by more than 180 tonnes per annum.”
