Surbana Jurong to run coastal protection study of North-West coastline

The study is aimed at protecting the four coastal reservoirs along the coastline from seawater inundation.

Surbana Jurong Group has been appointed to run a coastal protection study of the North-West coastline by the PUB Coastal Protection agency.

By the end of the study, the Surbana Jurong must be able to develop measures to protect the four coastal reservoirs along the coastline --- Tengeh, Poyan, Murai, and Sarimbun -- from seawater inundation among others.

The engineering team of Surbana Jurong will begin the study with an assessment of the inundation risks from rising sea levels and intense rainfall. 

Whilst doing so, the experts will also explore coastal and inland drainage adaptation measures.

Working with existing site conditions, Surbana Jurong will also look at ways to incorporate hybrid solutions where hard engineering measures are coupled with nature-based elements including mangroves.

The study will cover 24 kilometers of the coast, from Tuas Checkpoint to Lim Chu Kang jetty, which Hazel Khoo, director of PUB’s Coastal Protection Department, described as an "important area."

"There are also some areas along this coastline that contain mangrove habitats, and PUB will work with the relevant agencies to explore the potential of implementing hybrid solutions that combine existing natural elements with hard engineering measures," Khoo added.
