Singapore’s EMA awards conditional license to Gurin-Gentari JV to import electricity from Indonesia

The project is expected to start in 2027.

The Energy Market Authority has awarded a Letter of Conditional Approval to Vanda RE, the joint venture between Gurin Energy and Gentari International Renewables, to import low-carbon electricity from Indonesia to Singapore.

In a statement, Gurin Energy, which owns 75% of the JV, said the conditional license was one of the five jointly awarded by the Indonesian and Singaporean governments to facilitate cross-border green electricity trade.

Vanda RE’s infrastructure project aims to deliver 300 megawatts of non-intermittent renewable energy to Singapore starting in 2027 in line with EMA’s 75% load factor requirement.

The electricity will be produced from 2,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power and around 4,400 MW-hours of battery energy storage on the Riau Islands in Indonesia.

The JV is part of the Pathfinder Consortium along with EDPR Renewables APAC and Keppel Energy who are also awarded a conditional license. The group aims to build one gigawatt alternating current of subsea cable to enable the Green Corridor Indonesia project to trade electricity with Singapore.

Aside from this, the consortium will also partner with leading solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage suppliers to invest in solar and battery manufacturing plants in Indonesia.
