EMA, MPA call for low or zero-carbon power generation, bunkering solutions proposals

The solutions will be placed on Jurong Island.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has opened the submission for proposals through an expression of interest (EOI) to build, own, and operate low or zero-carbon power generation and bunkering solution in Jurong Island.

In a joint statement, the EMA and MPA said the EOI would enable the exploration of the use of low or zero-carbon fuels like hydrogen and ammonia for power generation, alongside the importation of electricity and domestic renewable energy resources.

The EOI will also allow them to assess the viability of the projects and develop the safety standards, regulations, and ecosystem needed.

Interested parties may submit their proposals by 30 April 2023.

“Hydrogen and ammonia have the potential to be a needle-moving decarbonisation solution for the power sector. Through this Expression of Interest, EMA is keen to collaborate with interested industry partners to explore what could possibly be the world’s first low or zero-carbon ammonia solution for power generation,” the EMA said.

MPA Chief Executive Teo Eng Dih said collaboration between the public and private sectors would play a key role in speeding up the maritime industry’s decarbonisation.
