COTD: Consumer-facing SMEs lag in decarbonisation amidst lower customer demand

B2B sectors lead in decarbonisation progress due to increased customer requirements.

Consumer-facing SMEs show less decarbonisation progress compared to B2B sectors due to perceived lower customer pressure, Bain & Company reported.

These SMEs include retail trade, hotels and accommodations, restaurants and F&B, health and social services, food processing and/or packaging, and education sectors.

Only 22% of consumer-facing SMEs are in the advanced and mid stages of their decarbonisation progress, compared to B2B sectors such as wholesale trade (28%), professional and business services (35%), and industrial and manufacturing (42%).

Bain & Company also revealed that 44% of consumer-facing SMEs have not yet started any decarbonisation efforts.

In addition, only 10% of consumer-facing SMEs identify customer requirements as a key driver for their decarbonisation efforts.

Meanwhile, industrial and manufacturing SMEs lead at 26%, followed by professional and business services at 25%, and wholesale trade at 17%.
