ST Electronics seizes S$4.6 mln contract for 30 trains in Brazil

ST Engineering’s electronics arm will design, manufacture and commission the on-train Passenger Information Systems for Concessao Metroviaria Do Rio de Janeiro.

ST Engineering’s electronics arm, ST Electronics, has been awarded a contract worth about S$4.6m by Changchun Railway Vehicles Co Ltd (CRC). ST Electronics will deliver Passenger Information Systems (PIS) for the Rio De Janeiro metro vehicles in Brazil, a project awarded to CRC by Concessao Metroviaria Do Rio De Janeiro SA, an ST Engineering announcement said.

The contract was awarded through ST Electronics' subsidiary in Shanghai, ST Electronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

According to the release, ST Electronics will design, manufacture and commission the PIS which will be installed in 30 trains, with a total of 120 cars. The systems are expected to enhance passenger travel experience through the provision of comprehensive real-time audio and multimedia information via computerised public announcements and digital display sub-syst ems. The work is scheduled to start as soon as possible and expected to deliver by mid 2011.

"ST Electronics has been awarded more than ten Passenger Information Systems projects in China; of which this is the second such contract for use in Rio De Janeiro. The growing acceptance and confidence shown by the China market in our rail electronics capability is encouraging. ST Electronics was awarded a similar S$4.6m PIS contract by CRC for Rio De Janeiro in May 2010.
