Singapore manufacturing output jumped 12.8% in February

According to a release, on a year-on-year basis, Singapore’s manufacturing output grew 12.8% in February 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output increased 11.2%.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output increased 6.2% in February 2014. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output rose 3.8%.

The biomedical manufacturing cluster’s output expanded 19.3% in February 2014 compared to a year ago. Pharmaceuticals output expanded 20.2% with higher production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and biologics products.

Output of the electronics cluster grew 14.8% year-on-year in February 2014. The computer peripherals (27.4%), other electronic modules & components (23.6%) and semiconductors (16.9%) segments recorded strong growth from the low base last year when demand was weak.

Output of the transport engineering cluster grew 11.1% year-on-year in February 2014. Growth was mainly contributed by the land transport segment which expanded 30.9% with higher orders for production and assembly of vehicle parts.

Output of the precision engineering cluster grew 9.2% year-on-year in February 2014. The machinery & systems segment rose 10.2%, supported by higher demand for semiconductor related equipment and lifting & handling equipment.

The chemicals cluster’s output rose 7.8% on a year-on-year basis in February 2014. The petrochemicals segment continued to see a ramp up in production by the newer plants, achieving a robust growth of 19.7%.

Output of the general manufacturing industries cluster increased 7.1% in February 2014 on a year-on-year basis. This was largely attributed to the low base effect in February last year when many firms shut down during the Lunar New Year period.
