New multi-billion euro feed additive plant opened on Jurong Island

The plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes.

After a two-year construction period, German manufacturer Evonik has opened its second complex for the production of methionine, an amino acid for poultry and pig feed. When methionine is added to animal feed, the crude protein content can be reduced which benefits animal organisms and reduces environmental impact.

Located beside its first plant in Jurong Island, the new plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes which brings the firm's annual global capacity to approximately 730,000 metric tonnes. 

Evonik has invested over half a billion euros in the new complex and generated over 100 additional jobs such as lab and process technicians and maintenance, environmental, safety and health engineers. 

The firm is banking on the gorwing demand for methionine as animal nutrition in Asia continues to grow. "On the one hand, the growing consumer affluence in Asia supports the increasing demand for animal protein. On the other, producers are increasingly focusing on more sustainable production of meat, eggs, milk, and fish,"  Johann-Caspar Gammelin, chairman of the board of management of Evonik Nutrition & Care GmbH said in a statement. 

Aside from Singapore, Evonik has four similar plants in Belgium, Germany and the US.
