The Substation gears up for SeptFest 2012

The month-long festival of art and culture will run from 31 August to 29 September.

This year’s festival features the anticipated sound, visual and performance projects selected for the coveted Open Call platform, the 5th Singapore Indie Doc Fest, selected performances from the Kuo Pao Kun Festival, a book launch, birthday party, and more. Join us this September as we celebrate another milestone for The Substation, Singapore’s original home for the arts.

Open Call

Open Call is an annual showcase of visual, performance and sound art. It supports strongly artistic, critical and rigorous arts proposals from emerging local artists, and has, since its inception in 2008, been a consistent platform for showcasing and supporting the work of promising artistic talents who often go on to create a strong body of new artistic work.

Book Launch and SIDF

Singapore Indie Doc Fest: 6 - 9 September, 2-4pm
Singapore’s first ever international documentary film festival returns. Featuring more compelling works, portrayals of real people and exciting personas. The Singapore Indie Doc Fest reflects the trials and tribulations of our time. Indie documentaries that say what they want.

The Substation Fairytales: 16 September, 2-4pm
After the publication of The Substation’s first book, Several Islands by Ho Rui An, comes not one but three books to add to your bedside reading collection. As the title suggests, these are fairytales – but not quite your regular tales of the damsel in distress and knight in shining armour. These are modern tales of love, identity, and belonging… not mere romantic pizzazz, but some of the things that really matter at the end of it all. Interest piqued? Come have a chat with the three authors during the combined book launch. This is held in conjunction with The Substation’s 22nd Birthday Party.

KPK Festival

On the night of Tuesday 10 September, 2002, the arts community in Singapore was awakened with the news of Kuo Pao Kun’s passing, marking a sorrowful moment in the history of Singapore’s arts and cultural landscape. Pao Kun left behind a treasure of arts and cultural legacies that could only continue to evolve and still contribute to society. Ten years on and The Substation, being one of Pao Kun’s many legacies, continues to be a Home for the Arts and importantly to defend and develop the spaces of independence and independent art practice in Singapore, as Pao Kun had always envisioned The Substation to be.

The Substation will be presenting three events as part of the Kuo Pao Kun Festival.
Growing Up: 14 - 15 September, 8pm
BluePrince: 27 - 29 September, 8pm
Remembering Kuo Pao Kun: 12pm 10 September - 12pm 11 September (24 hour event)
